DECOR & INTERIOR DESIGN TREND #1 :
In the simplest terms, minimalism is finding freedom and being unrestricted
in your home space. It’s not to say that you must own fewer items or getting
rid of everything in your home, but instead design an interior that allows you
to feel unbounded and stress free. Thus, old trends of trying to own everything
and anything dictated how we decorated our homes, and moreover, made our homes
look messy and cluttered. The more stuff we owned and could fit into our house,
the more well off we looked, and not just to other people, but in addition, to
make ourselves believe that too. For instance, we don’t necessarily need that
huge television that covers an entire living room wall or that pool table. Yes,
those things are cool and flashy, however, that is not what a home should be
about. A minimalist home design can look equally elegant without all
those fancy things. In order to create a minimalist
room there are 3 simple principles that you should keep in mind. These principles are, unrestricted, clean,
and poetic.
UNRESTRICTED INTERIOR DESIGN LAYOUT
Unrestricted means that your living area furniture items should not interfere with any activities that you do in that space. For example, let’s say you place multiple big sofas that take up most of your walking path into the living room, if you are now squeezing your way in-between them just to get into your living room, you are being restricted. Hence, our first goal when designing is visually planning the most optimal layout for the home that allows for better flow. For example, have one big sofa as your main piece in the room, instead of too many of them that obstruct your path.

CLEAN AND DECLUTTER SPACE
Having a stress free, uncluttered mind starts with
having a clean space. Therefore, throughout my whole blog site, I will continue
to say this again and again; one of the most important things you can do to any
room for any style of design is to declutter A LOT! Having everything clean and tidy gives you a blank canvas to work
with when decorating. Additionally, it also has an effect on your mentality.
That is what Minimalism is partly about; living with a little stress and
disturbance in your life.
POETRY IN COLOUR
Your living room space should emit a poetic language
that creates a sense of peace and tranquility. Therefore, the colour scheme
should be warm with complimentary colours. Additionally, try light, airy and
neutral colours in all aspects of the room.
From wall paints to the colour of the furniture,
pick accents that have simple textures (soft and smooth) as these will make your
room look cozy and comforting. Moreover, too much visual stimulation such as
stripes, multiple colours, and different textures will throw every off balance.
For your furniture, pick things that will compliment a
concept with a lot of open space. This means that you will have less furniture,
but the ones that you do have will need to be multi-functional to make up for
loss of other furniture. For instance, buy seating that has storage
compartments integrated inside them, instead of big bulky storage cabinets with
doors to open and handles sticking out. As a result, this will make your room
look seamless and less interrupted to the eyes. If you like the look of shelves,
opt to buy small shelf brackets to set up floating shelves on your walls that
you can use to store your books and plants. For instance, try these from aliexpress that look great and stylish for the price! Your local home hardware, like Home Depot, also sell shelvings. Of
course you will find a larger selection of designs online. Regardless of what
styles you choose, this will open up your floor space creating more
unrestricted areas.
HOME DECOR & INTERIOR DESIGN TREND #2 :
ECO - FRIENDLY TREND
The newer generation of millennials are becoming more and more aware of the
impact we are having on our planet. Therefore, newer trends focus around being
eco – friendly and less detrimental to the environment. With global warming
becoming more undebated, people and researchers are coming up with new ideas and
technology to combat the problem of climate change. Specifically in the home
designing sector. The three main principles behind this style is reducing the
carbon footprint, use of durable and sustainable products, and passive energy.
TINY HOMES AND INTERIOR SPACES
Building big homes and living spaces creates waste and introduces toxic chemicals into the environment, consequently leaving a huge carbon footprint behind. Thus, designing small spaces reduces all that and creates a lifestyle of simplicity without excess materials. In order to decorate homes like this, we need to apply concepts and ideas that allow you to live functionally in a smaller floor space.
DURABILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
Wood is one of the main materials used when
constructing a home because other materials cannot be renewed as quickly. For
this reason, natural and sustainable materials are becoming increasingly popular
with the eco-friendly home trends, especially within the newer generations of
homeowners.
bamoo is currently the most popular eco-friendly
material in this trend. Firstly, it’s considered a hardwood that is 3x harder
than oak, which is the most common in construction. Additionally, it’s also
super sustainable because of its ability to grow extremely fast compared to
trees. Bamboo is good for flooring, framing, and furniture design with its timeless look that will never go out of style.
PASSIVE ENERGY DESIGN
Green walls are a great way to introduce passive
energy qualities to your home. They range from just a few plant shelves on the
wall, to an entire wall made of vegetation. The major benefits are that they
provide all sorts of passive energy, as well as reducing the use of heating,
ventilation and air conditioning. Green walls can passively purify the air,
reduce noise pollution, reduce ambient temperature and more! A whole wall of
plants can get expensive, but in contrast, they generally don’t require a lot
of maintenance. If you don’t want a whole wall of plants, you can opt for a
few wall pots as well.

DESIGN TREND #3
MODERN/ CONTEMPORARY HOME
One of the most popular home trends today is the
modern or contemporary style look that is very appealing to the younger and
urban generation. It generally follows the rules for minimalistic style with
its simplicity and uncluttered look. However, it differs with the color scheme,
textures and furniture to achieve a more sophisticated mood and ambience. This
design looks great in spaces that such as apartments, lofts, office type
spaces, and traditional homes, but tends to be expensive. Designing your home to
have a modern look only requires some main basic rules; they are colour,
textures, lines, space and lighting, which if you get this right will have you
looking like money.
LOTS OF BLACK AND WHITE!
Black, whites, and neutrals are the main players in
this home and interior design style, which means if you like colour, this is
not the style for you. Just like with clothing, dressing up anything in all
black and white exudes sophistication, like all you do is read books and drink
wine, like your life depended on it. You really can’t go wrong here and the
only one rule you should follow is that, if your walls are painted white then
the furniture and home decor should be black and neutral or vice versa.
For the floors, opt for using wood that looks bare (without imperfections) and
smooth.
EVERYTHING SHOULD LOOK SHINY!
We all love shiny things because we know that
everything that shines is probably expensive. You can actually try to create
this style without breaking the bank because its all about getting the right
textures. You don’t need to buy the expensive high end brands to achieve the
look, just make sure everything has a smooth and high reflective texture; like
a generous amount of glass and metal. The only thing you might have to shell
out a bit of money for, are the sofas and seating that are leather because
those work really well with this style.
LIGHTING
This is another area where you might have to spend a bit of money in order to create the style. Track lighting, recessed lighting, cove lighting, and directed lighting are all essential to this look. Did I mention that those need to be very shiny as well? Hence, try to get lights that you are able move around and direct towards interior decor like display art, room accents or just your highly reflective smooth floors.
LINES AND SPACE PLANNING
The most important rule in this home and interior
design style is how you use lines and space to grab attention. For example, you
can have horizontal, vertical, curved, or squiggly lines anywhere, but they
need to be bold and strong enough to fit with the modern/contemporary style.
The lines can be just about anywhere. From being included right into the
architecture, to the very details of the room. They can come from the high
ceilings, bare window mullions, the geometric shapes of display arts, room
accents, the exposed ducts, vents, and the tracking system for lights; all of
which create the characteristics of the modern style.
As for the use of space, it’s similar to the
minimalist interior design trend where less is more. The goal here is make
details of the room stand out individually. Moreover, it’s okay to have bare
walls and lots of space between each piece of furniture, instead of having an
area cluttered with objects.
And that’s it, now you are up to date with the current trends going into 2021, so go try them out. If you enjoyed this post, make sure to like, comment below, share, and subscribe for future posts!
